Nigerian bridal party's canoe capsizes; 26 killed

A dozen revelers missing after river accident in northern region

updated 5:46 p.m. ET April 1, 2008

KANO, Nigeria - A large canoe packed with wedding revelers escorting a bride to her new husband capsized on a river in Nigeria, leaving at least 26 passengers dead, police said Tuesday.

Kano State police spokesman Baba Mohammed said three people survived the accident late Monday on a river in the northern state, while 26 bodies were recovered. With some 40 people believed onboard, about a dozen more were missing, he said. It was not known if the bride's body had been recovered.

About a dozen watercraft could be seen combing the river Tuesday in the vicinity of the accident. Townspeople said the canoe, which was carrying the bride to the home of her new husband, hit a tree submerged in the river, tumbling the passengers into the water.

Roadside bomb kills US airman in Baghdad

updated 5:03 p.m. ET April 3, 2008

BAGHDAD - The U.S. military says an American airman has been killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad.

A brief statement said the airman was on a patrol about noon when Thursday's attack occurred in a central area of the capital.

The identity of the slain airman has not been released pending notification of relatives.

The death raises to at least 4,012 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003. That's according to an Associated Press count.

Stocks pull back gains, end trading day mixed

Report of Washington Mutual investment buoys the banking sector

updated 4:14 p.m. ET April 7, 2008

NEW YORK - Stocks ended mixed Monday as Wall Street adopted a cautious stance ahead of quarterly profit reports, which begin in earnest when Alcoa Inc. issues its results after the market closes.

The stock market had popped up in earlier trading on corporate dealmaking — most notably, talk of a $5 billion private equity investment in Washington Mutual Inc.

The banking sector was fairly strong because of the Washington Mutual news, said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer’s Investment Research. But, he added, the broader market started selling off in afternoon trading when it began nearing the highs it saw in late February.
“When the market closes, first-quarter earnings kick up — it looks like people are taking money off the table ahead of those,†Detrick said. “We had a good rally. We’re thinking the next major driver will be those earnings reports.â€
Unofficial closing numbers showed the Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.01, or 0.02 percent, to 12,612.43, after rising more than 100 points earlier in the day.
Broader stock indicators also advanced. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 2.14, or 0.16 percent, to 1,372.54, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 6.15, or 0.26 percent, to 2,364.83.
Washington Mutual shot up $3.06, or 30 percent, to $13.24.
In other dealmaking news Monday, Swiss pharmaceutical maker Novartis AG said it will spend about $38 billion in a two-step bid for a majority stake in U.S. eye-care company Alcon Inc. Alcon rose $4.46, or 3 percent, to $152.90, and Novartis fell $1.47, or 2.8 percent, to $50.65.
Discover Financial Services LLC said it was buying the Diners Club brand from Citigroup Inc. for $165 million. Discover rose $1.17, or 6.8 percent, to $18.31, while Citi rose 73 cents, or 3 percent, to $24.81.
And meanwhile, Microsoft Corp. gave Yahoo Inc. a three-week deadline to agree to a takeover, or, Microsoft said, it would launch a proxy fight for control of the company. Yahoo fell 40 cents to $27.96, while Microsoft rose 9 cents to $29.25. Yahoo said the deal isn't in the best interests of its shareholders, and called Microsoft's proxy threat counterproductive.
Last week, stocks advanced as investors found relief in reports that Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Switzerland's UBS AG are selling stock to raise cash and Merrill Lynch & Co. believes it has sufficient cash to continue operating. Despite a report Friday showing the third straight month of job losses in March, the Dow finished last week up 3.22 percent, the S&P 500 index rose 4.86 percent, and the Nasdaq rose 4.20 percent.
And even as the Martin Feldstein, chief executive of the National Bureau of Economic Research, said Monday on CNBC he personally believes the U.S. economy has been slipping into recession since January, stocks extended their gains. The NBER has not officially decided whether the economy is in recession, and is not normally able to until after the fact.
On Monday, government bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, jumped to 3.58 percent from 3.47 percent late Wednesday.
Light, sweet crude rose $2.85 to $109.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold prices also increased, and the dollar gained against most other major currencies.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 630.8 million shares.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 4.86, or 0.68 percent, to 718.59.
Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 1.18 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 added 1.14 percent, Germany's DAX index rose 0.85 percent, and France's CAC-40 rose 0.89 percent.

Mauritania forces find bomb-making facility

Three flee after shootout; authorities claim link to al-Qaida network

updated 3:49 p.m. ET April 8, 2008

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania - Security forces in Mauritania found a bomb-making facility in a house they stormed after exchanging fire with gunmen believed to have been involved in the killing of four French tourists in December, officials said Tuesday.

The gunmen, who authorities said they suspected of having links to the al-Qaida terrorist network, fled after a shootout late Monday that left two dead on the outskirts of the capital, Nouakchott.

Police who entered the house afterward found a "laboratory poised to produce explosives," said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Adda, of the Islamic nation's judicial police force.

"We found an explosive device they were preparing to detonate in case the house was assaulted by security forces," Adda said.

At least three men managed to flee the house before police encircled it, he said.

Among those believed to have escaped from the building on Monday was Sidi Ould Sidna, who was arrested in January in connection with the tourist killings. Last week, Sidna escaped from a Mauritanian courthouse after an interrogation session, tricking guards who believed he was inside a bathroom.

Fatalities reported
An Associated Press reporter at the scene Monday saw the bodies of two men killed during the confrontation. The dead included one police officer and a gunman in civilian clothes who lay outside a house surrounded by police and army units who were calling in reinforcements.

The French tourists were gunned down Dec. 24 on the side of a Mauritanian highway where they had stopped to have a picnic near the town of Aleg, about 155 miles south of Nouakchott. Mauritanian officials say the men behind the attack are linked to an al-Qaida-affiliated terror cell headquartered in neighboring Algeria.
The tourist attack and a subsequent assault on a Mauritanian military outpost led organizers of the Dakar Rally road race to cancel the trans-Saharan course this year.

Baby with 2 faces born in north India

Doctors say infant with rare condition is doing well

updated 10:36 a.m. ET April 8, 2008

SAINI SUNPURA, India - A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.
The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated — she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.
"My daughter is fine — like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.
Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.
"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.
Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.
'Leading a normal life'
Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told The Associated Press.

"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."
Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.

"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.

Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.

"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.

Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.

Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.

"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.

The baby's rare condition is often linked to serious health complications, but Lali is doing well, a doctor says.

Seven or more eggs a week linked to death risk

Middle-aged men should limit consumption, study suggests

More egg on our faces? One expert said men should watch how many eggs they eat.

updated 9:31 a.m. ET April 9, 2008

WASHINGTON - Middle-aged men who ate seven or more eggs a week had a higher risk of earlier death, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.

Men with diabetes who ate any eggs at all raised their risk of death during a 20-year period studied, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study adds to an ever-growing body of evidence, much of it contradictory, about how safe eggs are to eat. It did not examine what about the eggs might affect the risk of death.
Men without diabetes could eat up to six eggs a week with no extra risk of death, Dr. Luc Djousse and Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found.
"Whereas egg consumption of up to six eggs a week was not associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, consumption of (seven or more) eggs a week was associated with a 23 percent greater risk of death," they wrote.
"However, among male physicians with diabetes, any egg consumption is associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality, and there was suggestive evidence for a greater risk of MI (heart attack) and stroke."
They urged more study in the general population.
Neither 'good' nor 'bad'
Eggs are rich in cholesterol, which in high amounts can clog arteries and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
One expert on nutrition and heart disease said the study suggests middle-aged men, at least, should watch how many eggs they eat.
"More egg on our faces? It's really hard to say at this point, but it still seems, if you're a middle-aged male physician and enjoy eggs more than once a day, that having some of the egg left on your face may be better than having it go down your gullet," said Dr. Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado and a former president of the American Heart Association.
"But, remember: eggs are like all other foods — they are neither 'good' nor 'bad,' and they can be part of an overall heart-healthy diet," Eckel wrote in a commentary.
More likely to drink, smoke
The Harvard team studied 21,327 men taking part in the much larger Physicians' Health Study, which has been watching doctors since 1981 who have agreed to report regularly on their health and lifestyle habits.
Over 20 years, 1,550 of the men had heart attacks, 1,342 had strokes, and more than 5,000 died.
"Egg consumption was not associated with (heart attack) or stroke," the researchers wrote.
But the men who ate seven eggs a week or more were 23 percent more likely to have died during the 20-year period.
Diabetic men who ate any eggs at all were twice as likely to die in the 20 years.
Men who ate the most eggs also were older, fatter, ate more vegetables but less breakfast cereal, and were more likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise — all factors that can affect the risk of heart attack and death.

Ethiopian soldiers accused of Somali massacre

Rights group says 21 civilians killed at mosque, 41 children taken prisoner

updated 1:08 p.m. ET April 23, 2008

NAIROBI, Kenya - Amnesty International accused Ethiopian soldiers on Wednesday of killing 21 people, including an imam and several Islamic scholars, at a Somali mosque and said seven of the victims had their throats slit.

The rights group said the soldiers had also captured dozens of children during the raid on the Al Hidaaya mosque in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, earlier this week during operations against Islamist insurgents.

Ethiopia has thousands of soldiers in neighboring Somalia to bolster a Western-backed government against rebels fighting an Iraq-style insurgency in the Horn of Africa nation.

The Ethiopian and Somali governments have not responded publicly to accusations of atrocities at the mosque. But they have frequently denied abusing human rights in the fight against groups they call al-Qaida-backed terrorists.

Moderate scholars die
Amnesty said those killed at the mosque included imam Sheik Saiid Yaha and several scholars of the moderate Tabligh group that operated there.
"Eyewitnesses report that those killed inside the mosque were unarmed civilians taking no active part in hostilities," Amnesty said. "Seven of the 21 were reported to have died after their throats were cut — a form of extra-judicial execution practiced by Ethiopian forces in Somalia."

Some moderate Islamist leaders have reacted to the mosque incident, and a recent upsurge of fighting in Mogadishu, by postponing plans to join U.N.-sponsored peace talks.

Dozens killed
More than 100 people have been killed since the weekend in clashes in the coastal capital, and the takeover of several small towns by the Islamists' militant al-Shabaab wing.

Washington last month put al-Shabaab on its terrorism list.

Amnesty urged the Ethiopian military to release all 41 children it said were held after the mosque raid.

"Witnesses have told Amnesty International that Ethiopian forces would only release the children from their military base in north Mogadishu 'once they had been investigated' and 'if they were not terrorists'," it said.
Some of the children — whose ages were as low as nine —were reported to have been freed, though the majority were still in custody, Amnesty's statement added.

Various witnesses told Reuters they had seen beheaded bodies lying outside the mosque after the fighting.

Another four corpses showed up in Mogadishu on Thursday, at the compound of the SOS children's hospital that had also been occupied by Ethiopian troops during clashes at the weekend.

"The Ethiopian troops who occupied SOS hospital since the weekend left last night taking the hospital's food and cooking oil with them and they also damaged the properties of the hospital," SOS security officer Abey Saney Osman told Reuters.

"There are four dead bodies, one inside and three others outside the gate of the compound. We are now inside the hospital and trying to sort all the mess," he said by phone.

An SOS employee, laboratory technician Mohammed Faagte, told Reuters a colleague died and four others were wounded while trying to flee the hospital when the fighting began.

Civilians have borne the burnt of Somalia's near-incessant violence since the 1991 toppling of a dictator.

About one million of the nation's 9 million population live as refugees in their own land.
